Hand of Supplements

These days you can go into any health food store or pick up a fitness magazine and you’ll be confronted with plethora of oversized bottles whose labels propel outrageous claims such as: Burn fat! Gain muscle! Get ripped! Get huge! There are pills, powders, and serums of all shapes, colors and sizes. You might even trip over a pyramid of weight gainer buckets on your way to the vitamins. With so many products that often sound like they are  based on scientific fact and with health store staff who frequently act as poorly informed pharmacists or salespeople, how are you supposed to know which supplements are worthwhile, and which are just making your urine more expensive, not to mention how much should you take?

Most Supplements Don’t Help

An important distinction to first take note of, is to remember is that most supplements do not work. For example, although many supplements advertise themselves as “fat burners,” they are more likely to be appetite suppressants. Many supplements advertised as “muscle gainers” may simply be high-calorie, sugary drink mixes with little benefit to your development. Worse yet, very few legal supplements provide the genuine and noticeable effects that illegal substances such as anabolic steroids do. It's also important to note that supplements do very little in general beyond occasionally giving you a buzz, jitters or some wacky flatulence. A handful of supplements are even dangerous and can cause liver damage.

Without a Good Diet and Exercise Routine, Supplements Do Little

Another critical thing to remember is that the supplements that are worthwhile do not work well without a good diet and workout training program. Even anabolic steroids, won’t be much use for building muscle if you don’t also work out and work out hard (although they possibly help preserve muscle for people with rare wasting diseases). No supplement in the world will substitute for poor nutrition, inactivity and bad habits. Looking for the magic pill to burn fat and re-sculpt a stunning physique of muscle mass? forget i, unless you are serious about taking a new lifestyle with adequate exercise and smart nutritional habits.

Supplements Are Largely Unregulated

Buyer beware. Unlike the food industry, which has stringent standards for labeling, the health and supplement industry remains largely unregulated. Buying a can of tomatoes, you can be pretty sure that the can contains tomatoes (not carrots or dog food), that the tomatoes are safe to eat, and that any other ingredients will be listed on the label. However, this is not the case for supplements. Companies producing supplements can say anything they wish on a label or in promotional materials without strict controls or oversight. It doesn’t have to be truthful and it doesn’t have to accurately reflect what’s in the packaging. Definately learn a bit about what is harmful to your health before taking some of these supplements - especially the hyped up products you see heavily marketed and that contain large combinations of ingredients to generate "pump" or to maximize muscle growth.
